The Flick: The true test of success for any film biopic is bringing those unfamiliar with the subject matter into the fold and thankfully the bold, unflinching and utterly unapologetic “Straight Outta Compton” manages to bring both old and new along for the ride.  And what a wild and controversial ride it is, with Director F. Gary Gray taking a hard-hitting look at the rise and fall of the famed rap group N.W.A. – the good, the bad and the ugly.  But it’s those very honest warts and all quality given to every character involved that makes the film so unique and, in turn, a great watch.  (Plus the spot on performances and rocking music kick equal amounts of ass!)  Only two items that make it short of five full stars – the normally stellar Paul Giamatti sticks out like a sore thumb here with his caricature turn as the group’s first manager Jerry Heller (everyone else seems to be playing it real and raw – go figure!) and at an almost two and a half hour running time his one is a tad too long. But those looking to re-live an important moment in time, Compton gives the straight story. (Plus the Director’s Cut here adds yet another twenty minutes – for die-hard Compton junkies only!)

Best Feature: Both the ‘Becoming N.W.A.’ and ‘N.W.A. Origins’ featurettes have unique looks at the real life events and people from both the actor and real N.W.A. member perspectives that’s utterly fascinating.

Best Hidden Gem: The full-length ‘Commentary’ from Director F. Gary Gray gives even more insight into the flick and his choices.

Worth the Moola: Adding both extra footage and docs that enlighten, this set is a fan’s wet dream.
